The Story Behind the NameThere is a rich sporting history associated with the name Ancil Hoffman and one that has been somewhat lost over the years. As part of our revitalization of the food and beverage operations at Ancil Hoffman Golf Course, Empire Golf is committed to the preservation of this unique part of Sacramento sporting history. What better way to start or end your round of golf than enjoying tasty food and beverages and the rich history of the man whose name is associated with one of the top public golf courses in the country? Ancil Hoffman, in addition to being a member of the Board of Supervisors of the County of Sacramento, played an important role in the sport of boxing in the U.S. For many years, prior to his time as a county supervisor, Ancil Hoffman was the manager and trainer of renowned heavyweight champion Max Baer. The Hoffman family has donated photos and memorabilia of Ancil during his years with Max Baer. As part of our ongoing revitalization of the restaurant operations, Empire Golf is in the process of framing and displaying these photos with descriptions of their historical origins. Stop by after your round for a beer or cocktail of your choice, or just enjoy the outdoor patio seating with some friends! |
